Every major military holiday, I make it a habit to study something about our nation’s history, especially military-related topics. This Memorial Day was no different. I watched docuseries on Washington and Lincoln, back to back, and came away struck by the same thing each time: imperfect men, impossible circumstances, and a temperament that outlasted both.
That got me thinking about legacy in a way I hadn't expected.

On May 26, 2026, we mourned the passing of a beloved family member, James “Jimmy” Liston Pressly, 77, who was born on March 31, 1949 in Kinston, NC to Mariana Rochelle and Joseph Earl Pressly.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection and Celebration of the Life of Jimmy, will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026 at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 2101 N. Herritage St., Kinston, NC. The family will receive friends following the service in Hamilton Hall at the church.
Mrs. Kelli Barefoot Stroud died Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center following a rapid decline in health after suffering a stroke. Born in Clinton, North Carolina, on January 26, 1965, she was the daughter of Carl and Jean Barefoot.
Nancy Carroll Howard Gladson, 92, of Kinston, departed from her earthly home on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Howard-Carter Funeral Home, with Pastor Greg Kincaid officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.
Snow Hill Primary gives out a weekly award called "Terrific Kid" awards. Each teacher at SHP chooses a student who has been responsible, shows great character, or has reached a personal goal. Reverend Paul Batteux Scott, Jr., age 95, passed peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of family on Sunday afternoon, May 25, 2026. Funeral Services will be held 2 PM Thursday, May 28th, at Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill. A private Committal Service will immediately follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends in the hour prior to the service from 1:00 – 1:50 PM in the Fellowship Hall of Calvary Memorial UMC and other times at the Scott residence.
The VFW post 2771and other volunteers help place American Flags upon our veterans’ graves. We place them on three graveyards in Kinston. We place about 2500 flags each year. We go on about a week before Memorial Day and pick them back up the weekend after Memorial Day.

The American Red Cross North Carolina Region will host a Kinston open house from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at 504 N. Herritage St. in Kinston.
