Obituary: Reverend Paul Batteux Scott, Jr.

Reverend Paul Batteux Scott, Jr., age 95, passed peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of family on Sunday afternoon, May 25, 2026.

Paul was born in Reidsville NC, the only child of Paul and Rebecca Scott. He was raised in Burlington, North Carolina and as a boy and young man he enjoyed horseback riding, pitching horseshoes and playing the saxophone in his high school band. After high school he attended and graduated from Wake Forest College and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary receiving a Bachelor of Divinity majoring in classical Greek and a Masters of Theology. Later in life he obtained a Master of Arts from Scarritt College.

Paul became a United Methodist Minister and served 11 churches from the Piedmont to the coast of North Carolina. He served forty years as a full-time pastor. His last full time church assignment was at the Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill where he and Glenda decided they would retire. After retirement, he continued to serve as pastor of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church in Snow Hill for several years.

Music was one of his lifelong passions. Paul sang his first solo, “Jesus the Very Thought of Thee” in his hometown church. For many years, he was a soloist on WRAL’s telecast, “The Circuit Rider”. From singing in church as a child to later serving as a choir member, soloist, music director, and saxophone player, music remained a meaningful part of his life. His other passion was his wife, Glenda. She was his lover and confidant, his dictionary for remembering church members' names, his thesis typist and an incredible mother to their children.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Glenda, his son, Paul Scott III and wife Ann of Belhaven, North Carolina, his daughter, Adrienne Denise Anderson of Deerfield Beach, Florida; and his grandchildren, Lauren, Marisa, and Parker whom he loved dearly as they referred to him as Opa.

Funeral Services will be held 2 PM Thursday, May 28th, at Calvary Memorial United Methodist Church in Snow Hill. A private Committal Service will immediately follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends in the hour prior to the service from 1:00 – 1:50 PM in the Fellowship Hall of Calvary Memorial UMC and other times at the Scott residence.

Mr. Scott will lie-in-repose on Wednesday from 8 AM – 4 PM at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to Calvary Memorial UMC, PO Box 445, Snow Hill, NC 28580
