Lenoir County restaurant inspections

The following inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Lovicks 

320 N Herritage Street, Kinston 

Date: 4/30

Score: 96.5

Observations: 

Facility did not have procedures for vomit & diarrheal events. Facility only had chart of supplies needed, on site. 

Rolling cart used to store washed and sanitized dishes was stored in directly in front of hand-washing sink in main prep/cook area. All hand-washing sinks shall be accessible to employees for hand-washing at all times. 

Dough burgers stored in hot holding cabinet not maintained at 135 degrees F today. All hot holding TCS foods shall be held at 135 degrees F or above. 

Flat of shell eggs 64-67 degrees F. Shell eggs stored beside both grills at room temperature.

Bowl of shredded cheese stored directly on top of foods in lift top cooler today. Bowl is used to store cheese for adding to eggs. Store containers of food on shelving or surfaces that will prevent contamination of foods.

Employees seen buttering toast, making pancakes, and doing other food prep without a hair restraint. 

Wiping towels used at front grill area stored in container of water. Cloths in use for wiping food spills and wiping counters and other equipment surfaces shall be stored in a chemical sanitizer solution at correct concentrations.

Ice scoop for back bulk ice machine stored on top of ice machine today. All in use utensils shall be stored in a clean, sanitized container; in the food, handle up; in water at least 135 degrees F; or in a dipper well to rinse food particles off utensil.

Clean dishes stored on top of cardboard today. Cardboard was from boxes of stock and storage from previous food delivery. All clean and sanitized dishes and equipment shall be stored on nonabsorbent and washable surfaces.

Multi use bowls and plates store food contact surface up today. Store all bowls and plates food contact area down to prevent contamination.

Single service bowls and trays stored food contact area up on main cook/prep line. All single service shall be stored food contact surface down to prevent contamination.

Provide a covered waste bin in female restrooms. Need trash can with a lid in employee restroom.

Need self closure device on employee restroom door. All restrooms shall have self closing doors.

Replace missing grout in between floor tiles in front prep/cooking area. Food debris is collecting in these area. 


Hardees

1344 Hwy 258 S, Kinston 

Date: 4/29

Score: 94

Observations: 

Liquid eggs and shell eggs exceeded 41 degrees F today.

Foods held by use of time were not labeled during inspection. Tags were not available for any foods held by use of time during inspection. Tags were then printed, but no foods were on prep line. Written procedures for foods held by use of time were not available during inspection. 

Cooler under main prep line is 43-44 degrees F today. Small cooler beside flat top grill is 43 degrees today. Repair these coolers to ensure they are maintaining at temperatures 41 degrees F or below. Repair doors on small cooler beside flat top cooler, beverage cooler at front counter area, and walk in cooler door that are not closing and sealing properly.

Repair toilet paper dispenser in men's restroom that is falling off the wall.

Sheet pans contain excessive amounts of carbon build up on the edges and rims of pans. 

Clean inside of front prep cooler. Clean inside of cooler on main prep line. Clean inside of raw meat freezer to remove ice build up. Clean shelving in upstairs stock area. 

Clean floor in walk in cooler. Clean upstairs stock/break area. Floors, walls, and ceilings shall be kept clean. 

Grout missing in between tiles throughout facility. Need coving at the bottom of mop wash area. Mop wash area (walls and floors) are in poor repair. Repair/fill in holes in walls throughout facility. Repair walk in cooler floor where it is coming apart. 


Bojangles 

400 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Score: 97

Observations: 

Foods seen marked with a total of 8 days were shredded lettuce, American cheese, and mac & cheese.

Repair door on soda machine at drive thru area. Repair small hot holding unit used for fries at drive thru. 

Dishes being washed in prep sink today. Prep sink is designed for food preparation only. Pre rinsing or pre washing dishes shall be done over a garbage receptacle, then washed, rinsed, and sanitized or sprayed in a sink or over and garbage receptacle or during the washing process.


Byrd's Restaurant

196 Hwy 58 S, Kinston

Score: 99.5

Observations: 

Establishment shall have a certified food protection manager present at all times.

Rusty shelving units in walk in cooler. Fryer door missing.


Fatbaby's Country Cooking 

1215 Greene Haynes Road, Kinston 

Date: 4/24

Score: 96.5

Observations: 

Non food contact surfaces of equipment shall be cleaned frequently to preclude accumulation of soil residues. Extensive additional cleaning is needed on gaskets, equipment and handles of equipment.

Observed water surfacing in drain field in several areas.

Walls and ceilings and floors observed to need additional cleaning. Walls in 3-comp sink area need to be cleaned.

Lighting in walk in coolers is very low (around 1 foot candles) due to the amount of food and storage in both walk in cooler and walk in freezer.


Ma's Hot Dog House & Grill 

2515 Hwy 258 S, Kinston 

Date: 4/24

Score: 96

Observations: 

 Back door has visible sunlight showing slightly at place where doors meet, insects and pest could enter in from this hole. A few flies observed today during inspection. This comment had been made previously and other openings had been repaired. Establishment shall monitor opening and take whatever pest controls measures necessary to prevent pests or repair/replace.

Aroma rice steamer, stove and refrigeration not for commercial use.

Chipping shelves, bar and cabinets in reach in units next to cook line. Shelving shall be repaired or replaced with approved ANSI equipment.

Some areas of floor are cracked and wall above prep table has chipping paint.

Store mops for air drying after use. Mops observed drying in mop bucket. Mops shall be properly hung to air dry.

Lighting above prep tables read 11-17 ft candles in the front room. Light intensity above cook top, under hoods read 15 ft candles. Back room lighting is currently under repair. Lighting shall be 50 ft candles of light above all food prep areas.

Kentucky Fried Chicken

1613 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Observations: 

Tray used to hot hold chicken nuggets was in very poor repair; was broken on the sides and the bottom contained a long crack down the center.

Detail cleaning on the outsides of hot holding cabinets - the bottom and sides. Clean condiment containers near front counter area (on the end of the prep line). Detail cleaning needed on equipment on main cook line.

Garbage dumpster is missing a drain plug. Drain plugs shall be in place in all dumpsters.

Clean floor and wall behind fryers and chicken breading area. Detail floor cleaning in chicken walk in cooler and in walk in freezers.

Wall is rusting at 3 compartment sink area beside dishwashing sink drainboard. Wall is coming apart in this area. Floor is in poor repair in this area. Wall/door frame of chicken walk in cooler beside door is in poor repair. Paint is peeling on walls at dishwashing area entrance, wall outside of chicken walk in cooler, and under soap dispenser at hand-washing sink by dishwashing area.
