On August 12, 2025, Kinston Police Department Detectives were conducting consensual encounters as part of ongoing criminal investigations. While in the area of Holly Lane, detectives observed two males who appeared to be attempting to conceal items in their waistbands.
Ruben Carnell Sloan, Sr. of Kinston passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. The funeral service will be conducted on Friday, August 15 at 11:30 am in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 am until the funeral hour at the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm at Wayne Memorial Park with military rights in Goldsboro.
On August 9, 2025, at approximately 11:19 p.m., Kinston Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired into an occupied vehicle near George Avenue and Dixon Street. The victim’s vehicle was struck nine (9) times.

A La Grange man has been charged in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found in a ditch along Paul’s Path Road in Lenoir County on Saturday afternoon.
On August 11, 2025, deputies with the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle for traffic violations along Highway 70 West, just outside of La Grange.
On Monday, August 12, 2025, a registered sex offender was arrested in Lenoir County for failing to report a change of address, as required by North Carolina law.
Kinston Police Department Detectives have continued their investigation into this incident. Through further follow-up, detectives obtained warrants for 20-year-old Erion Strong, of Kinston, on the following charges:

This evening, Kinston Police Department officers responded to a report of a 12-year-old who had been shot in the arm on Dixon Street. The victim received medical attention, and investigators are actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As I was looking through some of my old columns, I found one from 24 years ago on the subject of – drum roll – artificial intelligence. The column addressed one critic’s response to the film: “A.I. – Artificial Intelligence.” Bart Kosko, then a world-renowned expert in the field of artificial intelligence, attacked the film not for its plodding plot or bleak vision of the cruelty of human against defenseless robotic creatures. Instead, Kosko makes several assertions based on what seemed fuzzy logic at best.
