Today at Woodington Middle School, students reported to school administrators that another student might have a weapon in his book bag. School administrators immediately investigated, which determined an 11-year-old male student was in possession of an unloaded firearm in his book bag. The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office took possession of the weapon and will make decisions about possible charges and other necessary steps moving forward.
On May 17, 2025, at approximately 5:20 p.m., officers with the Kinston Police Department’s D-Squad conducted a traffic stop on Cunningham Road for motor vehicle violations. During the stop, officers observed indicators of narcotics activity inside the vehicle.
A convicted felon was arrested by Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office deputies Tuesday after he was found hiding in an outbuilding with a firearm.

A Kinston man was arrested on drug charges and for carrying a concealed gun while a Raleigh woman received charges for driving without a license and other driving violations following a traffic stop on Sunday on U.S. 70 near La Grange.

In the early hours of Saturday, September 28, 2024, at approximately 4:00 AM, officers from the Kinston Police Department's C-Squad conducted a traffic stop on Dorian Powell, 39, of Kinston, for motor vehicle violations.
On Friday, September 27, 2024, at approximately 12:23 PM, officers from A-Squad responded to a report of a careless and reckless driver on Highway 70. Upon locating the vehicle, officers initiated a traffic stop involving the driver, identified as Richard White Jr., 39, of Broadway, NC.
On May 23, 2024, Kinston Police attempted to arrest Demetrius Williams, 36, of Goldsboro, resulting in an officer-involved shooting and a subsequent vehicle pursuit. Williams, who was found with a firearm, marijuana, and cocaine in his vehicle, was charged with multiple felonies and placed in Lenoir County Jail without bond. The NC SBI is assisting with the investigation into the shooting while the department conducts its own internal review.
Officers from KPD's D-Squad conducted a traffic stop with Tavon Copeland (28 of Greenville, NC) on Cunningham Road/Hwy 11. During the traffic stop officers conducted a probable cause search and located a concealed firearm. According to Maj. Ryan Dawson from Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, “there was an accidental discharge of a firearm at the business (overnight). The single discharged bullet struck two people. There is no danger to the public as this was not a robbery or believed to be intentional by any purpose. The two victims were transported by EMS.“
