Arrest made following traffic stop involving impaired driver and firearm

On July 25, 2025, officers with the Kinston Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle previously linked to a disturbance call. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers made contact with the driver, identified as 52-year-old John Holmes of Snow Hill, North Carolina.

Officers immediately observed signs of impairment and noticed Holmes reaching around inside the vehicle. For officer safety, Holmes was removed from the vehicle. During the interaction, officers observed part of a firearm concealed in a bag in the same area where Holmes had been digging.

Following further investigation, Holmes was placed under arrest and charged with the following offenses:

-Driving While Impaired (DWI)

-Failure to Comply with License Restrictions

-Carrying a Concealed Gun After Consuming

-Open Container of Alcohol After Consuming
