LITTLE ROCK, AR-- Kaitlin Beratto of Kinston, NC, has been named to the Dean's List for the Spring 2025 semester at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
I had a break from high school graduations after my oldest four grandchildren earned diplomas. Courtney was first, followed by Haley, Taylor, and Jaxen. Jaxen’s graduation coincided with COVID, so he had no real commencement ceremony until he finished his degree at Johnston Community College. As you may recall, I call my first four grandchildren “The Old Guard.”

Trenton — The Jones County Board of Commissioners approved the fiscal year 2026 budget and agreed to rebid the county’s lawn care contract following public concerns over transparency and bid specifications during a regularly scheduled meeting Monday night.
The Lenoir County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to approve a lease agreement with the State of North Carolina for a portion of the Richard Caswell Memorial Historic Site, paving the way for a new public recreation project in Kinston.

David Randall Huggins, 76, of Kinston, NC entered into eternity on June 6, 2025, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, NC. A funeral service will be held at Tanglewood Church, 2102 Rouse Road, Kinston NC, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 6:00 PM with visitation to follow.
I feel compelled to address recent statements made by Lenoir County Commissioner Keith King and North Carolina House Representative Chris Humphrey regarding the City of Kinston’s proposed FY26 Budget and property tax rate. As the Mayor of Kinston, I believe the public deserves a clearer and more complete understanding of the facts, particularly those that were not fully explained or were presented without proper context.

On 06/04/25 at approximately 4:50pm, SHPD was dispatched to the 500 block of Jordan Ave. to investigate a reported shots fired call. Minutes later, Corporal Payton and Chief Smith arrived on scene and secured the area for investigative purposes.

GREENE COUNTY — The Greene County Board of Commissioners on Monday approved an update to its Voluntary Agricultural District Ordinance, signaling a renewed effort to revitalize a program that has been "defunct" since 2018 with no land currently enrolled. The update paves the way for a new promotional campaign to encourage local farmers and landowners to participate.
