Greensboro couple arrested after officers respond to unresponsive driver
On February 14, 2026, at approximately 4:23 p.m., officers with the Kinston Police Department’s A-Squad were dispatched to a restaurant drive-through on the 900 block of West Vernon Avenue following a report of a subject slumped over in a vehicle.
Officers arrived and located the vehicle occupied by 63-year-old Cynthia Todd of Greensboro, who was found unconscious in the driver’s seat, 39-year-old Jeffrey Shields of Greensboro, and a 7-year-old juvenile passenger.
Officers observed an open container of alcohol in plain view and woke the occupants to begin an investigation. The investigation revealed Todd was in possession of oxycodone pills, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. It was also determined that Shields was wanted by the United States Marshals Service for federal probation violations.
Both adults were taken into custody without incident. The juvenile was released to a parent.
Todd was charged with the following:
- Possession of Schedule II Controlled Substance
- Possession of Schedule VI Controlled Substance
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
- Exposing Children to Controlled Substances
Shields was served with his federal warrant and placed in the Lenoir County Jail without bond.
Due to the involvement of a juvenile, officers will be conducting follow-up with the Department of Social Services.
