Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Crash Under Investigation
On February 10, 2026, at approximately 11:59 p.m., KPD’s C-Squad officers were dispatched to the intersection of North Queen Street and Park Avenue in reference to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash.
Upon arrival, officers located the involved vehicle and the pedestrian, identified as 65-year-old Louis Smith. Mr. Smith sustained visible injuries to his upper and lower body. Officers assisted Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue personnel by providing first responder care until EMS arrived. Mr. Smith was transported to ECU Health for additional treatment. His current condition is stable.
The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was driven by 41-year-old Shawn Montgomery of New Bern, who was traveling southbound on North Queen Street when he struck Mr. Smith who was walking across the roadway, not within a crosswalk.
This incident remains under investigation. At this time, officers do not believe speed or alcohol are contributing factors. No charges have been filed.
