Man Arrested After Assaulting Officer While Fire Crews Investigated Gas Odor
On February 10, 2026, KPD’s A-Squad officers were dispatched to the area of Orion Street and King Street to assist the Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue. Fire personnel were investigating a reported gas odor and requested assistance due to a belligerent individual on scene.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with 48 year old Tony Coleman. Officers advised Coleman that he needed to vacate the area so emergency personnel could safely perform their duties.
During the interaction, Coleman responded to the request by striking an officer in the facial area, causing injury. Officers attempted to place Coleman into custody, at which time he resisted. He was ultimately subdued and taken into custody without further incident.
Coleman was charged with the following:
• Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer Inflicting Serious Injury
• Resisting a Public Officer
• Intoxicated and Disruptive
He was transported to the Lenoir County Jail and is being held without bond.
The injured officer received medical attention and will make a full recovery.
