Case Update During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Tyghjheri Jones, 20, of Goldsboro. On April 5, 2024, members of the Kinston Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and State Bureau of Investigation devised a plan to apprehend Jones.

A former teacher assistant at Southwood Elementary School has been charged with embezzlement. Jennifer West, 43, of Kinston, who served as the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Treasurer for the school, has been charged with four counts of embezzlement stemming from an investigation into the PTA at the school. The investigation revealed nearly $16,000 of PTA funds were misapplied in the span of two months.

Susan Elizabeth Spence, known to friends and family as Beth, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024, from a long illness. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at a later date.
