Former teacher assistant charged with embezzlement

A former teacher assistant at Southwood Elementary School has been charged with embezzlement.

Jennifer West, 43, of Kinston, who served as the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Treasurer for the school, has been charged with four counts of embezzlement stemming from an investigation into the PTA at the school. The investigation revealed nearly $16,000 of PTA funds were misapplied in the span of two months.

West was served with arrest warrants at the Lenoir County Courthouse earlier today and given a secured bond. This investigation is ongoing.
