Asparagus is popping up, and I do mean popping up, this interesting vegetable grows straight up, and can pop up to almost a foot. Most asparagus you will see is green, but there are other varieties you may sometimes see, white, which is more delicate and difficult to harvest, and purple, which is smaller and fruitier in flavor. No matter the type you choose, asparagus is a tasty, versatile vegetable that can be cooked in lots of ways or enjoyed raw in salads.
Lenoir County Health Department release on rabid raccoon discovery
A rabid raccoon has been discovered in La Grange. The Lenoir County Health Department (LCHD) received confirmation from the North Carolina State Laboratory that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies. The animal was located in the area of La Grange. This is the first animal identified as rabid in the county this year.
New Bern man arrested in Lenoir County for fentanyl trafficking
A New Bern man has been arrested in Lenoir County on a narcotics charge.
Collaborative efforts result in arrest of Goldsboro resident
Case Update During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Tyghjheri Jones, 20, of Goldsboro. On April 5, 2024, members of the Kinston Police Department, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and State Bureau of Investigation devised a plan to apprehend Jones.

Former teacher assistant charged with embezzlement
A former teacher assistant at Southwood Elementary School has been charged with embezzlement. Jennifer West, 43, of Kinston, who served as the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Treasurer for the school, has been charged with four counts of embezzlement stemming from an investigation into the PTA at the school. The investigation revealed nearly $16,000 of PTA funds were misapplied in the span of two months.

On April 2, 2024, at approximately 5:00 pm, members of the Kinston Police Department responded to a report of a shooting that had taken place near the 2100 block of Viking Dr. Kinston, N.C. Officers made contact with the victims, and through further investigation with witnesses in the area, it was determined that there was a large fight in the area involving both males and females.

Kinston Shooting Incident Leads to Two Arrests, Charges Filed
On March 4, 2024, at approximately 3:00 pm, members of the Kinston Police Department responded to a report of a shooting that had taken place near the 900 block of E. King St. Kinston, N.C. Officers made contact with seven young adults and juveniles, who advised that they were walking in the area, and they were approached by a group of males that initiated an altercation.
