Former teacher assistant charged with embezzlement
A former teacher assistant at Southwood Elementary School has been charged with embezzlement. Jennifer West, 43, of Kinston, who served as the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Treasurer for the school, has been charged with four counts of embezzlement stemming from an investigation into the PTA at the school. The investigation revealed nearly $16,000 of PTA funds were misapplied in the span of two months.

Officers made contact with the victims, and through further investigation with witnesses in the area, it was determined that there was a large fight in the area involving both males and females.

The Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Lenoir County will host their annual plant sale on April 13th from 8am – 12 noon. This is located at their greenhouse area behind the Lenoir County Cooperative Extension Office, (1791 HWY 11 55 Kinston, NC 28504.)

Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) is announcing the winners of the 2024 Third District of North Carolina Congressional Art Competition. The Congressional Art Competition is an annual, nationwide event for high school students to showcase their artistic abilities. Each congressional district's winning piece of artwork is hung in the Cannon Tunnel to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Kinston Shooting Incident Leads to Two Arrests, Charges Filed
On March 4, 2024, at approximately 3:00 pm, members of the Kinston Police Department responded to a report of a shooting that had taken place near the 900 block of E. King St. Kinston, N.C. Officers made contact with seven young adults and juveniles, who advised that they were walking in the area, and they were approached by a group of males that initiated an altercation.
