On Tuesday, July 26, 2022, Investigators with the Kinston Police Department arrested Calvin Suggs for his involvement in the Homicide of a 17 year old Kinston resident and the Attempted Murder of a 71 year old Kinston resident on July 25th, 2022. Suggs has been charged with Aid and Abet to Murder and Aid and Abet to Attempted Murder and placed in the Lenoir County Jail under a $2,000,000.00 bond.
Ervin Lee Waters Jr. (DOB: 8/10/1997) has been charged and arrested for the 1st Degree Murder regarding the incident on the 1500 Block of Hyman Avenue and Attempted 1st Degree Murder for the incident near the intersection of Adkin Street and E. Bright Street. Samuel Tiveon Roberts (DOB: 6/2/1990) has been charged and arrested in connection to the above listed incidents for Aid/Abet 1st Degree Murder and Aid/Abet Attempted 1st Degree Murder.
Last year, the Public School Forum of North Carolina convened the inaugural cohort of the Rural Teacher Leadership Network, which is designed to bring together diverse groups of educators across North Carolina who seek to strengthen their practice, foster community with teacher leaders from across other rural districts, and develop their leadership capacity to guide other teachers in their schools. The network creates a strong and lasting community of rural educators with a focus on equity, trauma-informed practice, global education, and teacher leadership.
On Monday, July 25th, 2022, at approximately 4:20 am, Kinston Police Officers responded to a report of a shooting that had occurred near the intersection of Adkin Street and E. Bright Street. On the same date at approximately 4:40 am, Kinston Police Officers were called to a report of an individual that had been shot on the 100 block of Airport Rd. A short time later at approximately 5:45 am, officers were called to the 1500 block of Hyman Ave. Kinston, N.C. in reference to a deceased individual near the roadway.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office along with the NC State Bureau of Investigation are currently investigating two separate shooting incidents that occurred near the Greene/Lenoir County Line.

The SmART Gallery is hosting an “Artist Talk” free to the public. The event will feature one of SmART Kinston’s artists, Maner Nobles. She will be talking about her art career, her artistic medium, and the experiences she has had through the practice of her craft.

Sherrinita Caldwell of Kinston wanted to finish what she had started a few years ago, her college degree. Married, separated, and a single mother of two, she was a stay-at-home mother for a few years. She relocated from Waldorf, MD back to Kinston in 2019 to help care for her mother who was battling cancer. Her mother’s health improved, and Caldwell decided to enroll into the Early Childhood Program at Lenoir Community College.
NC Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Lenoir County announce the certification of ten Junior Master Gardeners (JMG). The JMGs completed classroom and individual activities, participated in leader/community service projects while learning all about plants, gardening techniques, landscape design, composting, soil and water, recycling, insects and career exploration and life skills.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) and the World Golf Hall of Fame announced that the World Golf Hall of Fame will be moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina. Governor Roy Cooper joined the announcement today, where the two organizations detailed the new visitor experience at the USGA’s Golf House Pinehurst campus set to open in 2024. The Hall of Fame will relocate its physical collection from Florida to North Carolina.

July 19, 2022, Electrolux hosted a donation event in partnership with United Way to distribute $100,000 worth of air conditioning (AC) units to the community.
The Gate of Lenoir County is hosting a free concert with gospel rap artist Capello on July 23, 2022. Family activities at Pearson Park begin at 3:00 pm with the concert starts at 6:00 pm. The Gate is a faith-based community center that empowers youth to take ownership of their decisions.
On Tuesday night’s city council meeting, the council selected Rhonda Barwick as its new City Manager. Barwick has worked with the city of Kinston for 28 years.
