New Update: Arrests made in recent shooting

Additional Case Update:

On Tuesday, July 26, 2022, Investigators with the Kinston Police Department arrested Calvin Suggs for his involvement in the Homicide of a 17 year old Kinston resident and the Attempted Murder of a 71 year old Kinston resident on July 25th, 2022. Suggs has been charged with Aid and Abet to Murder and Aid and Abet to Attempted Murder and placed in the Lenoir County Jail under a $2,000,000.00 bond.

Investigators were also able to charge Ervin Waters Jr. with the murder of John Palmer which occurred on July 25th, 2022. Waters will remain in the Lenoir County Jail under no bond.

At this time the Kinston Police Department believes that those directly responsible for these recent murders have been apprehended. The Kinston Police Department will be working closely with the Lenoir County District Attorney’s Office as well as the United States Attorney’s Office to seek prosecution for those involved. Investigators will continue to follow leads to ensure that anyone who may have assisted with these crimes is prosecuted as well.

Ervin Lee Waters Jr. (DOB: 8/10/1997) has been charged and arrested for the 1st Degree  Murder regarding the incident on the 1500 Block of Hyman Avenue and Attempted 1st Degree  Murder for the incident near the intersection of Adkin Street and E. Bright Street. Waters was taken into custody without incident in Greenville, NC with the assistance of the NC SBI and the  Greenville Police Department. 

Samuel Tiveon Roberts (DOB: 6/2/1990) has been charged and arrested in connection to the above listed incidents for Aid/Abet 1st Degree Murder and Aid/Abet Attempted 1st Degree  Murder.

This is still an active investigation and more arrest and charges are possible. 

Previous Story:

On Monday, July 25th, 2022, at approximately 4:20 am, Kinston Police Officers responded to a report of a shooting that had occurred near the intersection of Adkin Street and E. Bright Street. Officers arrived on scene and discovered that an unknown assailant had fired multiple rounds into a vehicle; the victim, a 71 year old female of Kinston, was unharmed.

On the same date at approximately 4:40 am, Kinston Police Officers were called to a report of an individual that had been shot on the 100 block of Airport Rd. Kinston, N.C. Officers arrived on scene to find John Palmer, 28, of Kinston deceased as a result of a gunshot wound.

A short time later at approximately 5:45 am, officers were called to the 1500 block of Hyman Ave. Kinston, N.C. in reference to a deceased individual near the roadway. The individual was identified as a 17 year old juvenile who suffered multiple gunshot wounds. At this time, it appears that all of the incidents are related and Kinston Police Detectives are working diligently to identify the perpetrator(s).
