The following are the most recent closings and delays related to Winter Storm 2020
The N.C. Department of Transportation selected its preferred route for the future 22-mile U.S. 70 Kinston Bypass. The route, Alternative 1SB, or “Shallow Bypass”, goes between the N.C. 903/ U.S. 70 interchange in La Grange and existing U.S. 70 east of Dover.
No major changes in the latest update. The snowfall accumulation forecast remain the same. Snow and rain mix still expected to begin in our area between 5pm and 8pm.
At 4:02 Thursday morning, the National Weather Service in Morehead City increased the snowfall totals for much of our coverage area. Kinston and Snow Hill are expected to receive approximately 4” while Trenton is expecting 3”. There’s a 10% chance for 5-6” of snow.
On Wednesday the center hosted free tours for Lenoir County Schools fourth-graders which were made possible by a $1700 sponsorship from Tands, Inc/ Bojangles. The donation covered expenses for student admission and their transportation to the site.
In the latest National Weather Service in Morehead City briefing, the snowfall total for Kinston is predicted to be between 2” and 3”. There’s a 10% chance that snowfall amounts could increase to 4”. Snowfall is expected to begin Thursday afternoon and end Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, “The chart of the left is our official forecast. On the right, we are showing ‘worst case scenario’, (10%chance of occurring). We are still over 24 hours out and there are still a lot of discrepancies between models.”
As of 3:07 p.m., the National Weather Service in Morehead City, NC is calling for 1-2” of snow for much of our coverage area. The snow is expected Thursday evening through daybreak Friday. The NWS also stated in its release, “This forecast is very fluid. While confidence has increased that we will see precipitation in our area, many factors still have to come together just right for snowfall. Please monitor for updates.”
The Kinston Police Department will be participating in a traffic enforcement project during the next few weeks. This enforcement project will focus on Hill Farm Road and Smithfield Way in Kinston NC.
The 2020 Miss Neuse Scholarship Pageant sponsored by Hugo Fire and Rescue will be held February 22, 2020 at Kinston Lenoir County Performing Arts Center beginning at 7:00pm.
On Saturday, the North Carolina Science Olympiad participants and volunteers stood and cheered for LCC’s Director of Marketing, Richy Huneycutt. They surprised her with an award given for 20 years of dedication to the program.
Emergency crews responded to a late-night structure fire along Sharon Church Road in Grifton. According to Capt. Frank White with Hugo Volunteer Fire & Rescue, “We had a firetruck rollover while responding to a structure fire just off Hwy 11. The firetruck rolled up on its side and into the ditch. We had two personnel on the truck. They’ve both been treated and have been sent to UNC Lenoir [Health Care].”
According to UNC Lenoir Health Care, both firefighters have been treated and released.
The Lenoir County Board of Elections opened 4 early voting sites this week for the March 3, 2020 primary. Those sites are located at Teacher’s Memorial Gym, NC Cooperative Extension Office, Fairfield Rec Center and Ebenezer Church (La Grange).
Emergency crews responded this morning to a structure fire on Potters Hill Road in Pink Hill. There is one confirmed fatality. Neuse News is expecting a statement from the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office. We'll release more details as we're made aware.
Lenoir Community College hosted a pop-up block party Wednesday at Lovit Hines Community Center on King Street to announce their educational partnership with the Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Department.

Recently representatives for the City of Kinston Pedestrian Plan update visited several locations around downtown Kinston to ask residents, employees, and visitors of Kinston about their experiences and preferences for walking in the City, ending at the Neuse Regional Library for a Community Workshop. Participants were able to share the locations they visit regularly and ideas for future projects.
