Masterbrand cabinets to expand and add 464 new jobs

MasterBrand Cabinets will be expanding in Lenoir County and bringing new jobs to Kinston. The company made the announcement at Lenoir Community College’s Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing Center as part of the NC Global TransPark Economic Region Development. MasterBrands, a subsidiary of Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc., will invest more than $13.5 million to expand production capacity at its manufacturing center in Kinston. The salary of the new jobs will vary, but the average wage for all the new jobs will exceed the median average for Lenoir County of $39,839.

Mayor Don Hardy re-elected to the National League of cities (NLC) Board of Directors

Mayor Dontario Hardy of Kinston, NC, was elected to the National League of Cities (NLC) board of directors by NLC’s membership at the 2021 virtual City Summit. Hardy was elected to a 2-year term and will provide strategic direction and guidance for NLC’s federal advocacy, governance and membership activities. NLC is the largest and most representative organization for cities, their elected leaders and municipal staff, and advocates for city priorities in Washington by building strong federal-local partnerships.

Starting in September Bird Lands In Kinston

The City of Kinston is partnering with Bird, the Los Angeles, California-based, shared electric scooter company, to bring e-scooters to the city in the coming days. Bird is logical way of socially distanced travel. The scooters are available through a mobile phone application and and users are charged by the minute at no cost to the city.

Longtime city manager set to leave Kinston

For the first time in nearly a decade, the city of Kinston is looking for a city manager.

During closed session of Tuesday’s regular meeting, City Manager Tony Sears tendered his resignation to the Kinston City Council; his final day in the position will be Aug. 17. He has accepted the deputy city manager position for the City of Wilson.

Sadly for the second year in a row, the Kinston City Council has sought these personal increases, yet this year's discussion is distracting from the fact that they are also raising property taxes. The cost to the taxpayers if approved would be $670,000. Despite the fact the Kinston City Council has already voted on their increases, they could amend the budget tonight, by stripping the salaries and allowances back to the FY20 funding and passing a revised budget.

Kinston City Council set to increase property taxes and seeks own pay raise second year in a row

Kinston City manager Tony Sears released his budget recommendations to Council at the meeting on June 1, 2021. A proposed increase in Property Tax from $0.73 to $0.77 per $100 valuation is included in the 2021-2022 City Budget. The budget also includes a $3,600 increase to the Mayor’s salary and the total line item increase in City Council members’ salaries is $18,000 total per year, also $3,600 each for the year. This is more than a 40% increase over previous years. In addition to the salary increases, the Board Member Allowance increased 44.98% to $19,422.

“The City Council and myself worked tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Hardy. “When you start talking about advocating resources for vaccinations and food drives, COVID-19 testing, and organizing boots on the ground trying to get people vaccinated.”

Smithfield Foods thanks UNC Lenoir Health Care with a luncheon

In celebration of National Hospital Week, and to thank all of the health care workers for their service throughout the pandemic, Smithfield Foods organized a luncheon Thursday at UNC Lenoir Health Care. “We are here today to honor the health care heroes that have been such a tremendous service throughout this pandemic by showing them our gratitude from Smithfield and our employees which have also been essential, by serving up a little food,” said Steve Evans, the Director of Community Development with Smithfield Foods.
