Kinston officials call for patience during independent reviews

Kinston officials call for patience during independent reviews

The City of Kinston released the following on Monday afternoon:

Our hearts are heavy as we address the recent incidents that have deeply affected our City. This is an emotional time for our entire community, and the Mayor and Council are profoundly concerned about what has transpired. We understand and share your anguish, and we want to assure you that we are taking these matters with the utmost seriousness.

We will navigate these challenges together, because we are a resilient community. We are addressing these matters with the seriousness and thoroughness they deserve and with the appropriate respect for those who have been impacted. Therefore to address the community’s concerns, both the Richard Green incident and the officer-involved shooting on Manchester will undergo independent, third-party reviews. While an SBI investigation into the officer-involved shooting is standard procedure, we are also proactively asking for an outside third-party to review the investigation into the Richard Green incident. This is being done specifically to ensure an unbiased and thorough examination.

We have confidence in the independent investigations underway and want to allow for full finding of the facts, which is why we cannot answer questions out of concern of interfering with or compromising the investigations. Once the investigations are complete, the City of Kinston will act in accordance with the findings.

Our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted by the various incidents that have taken place in the community. We hope that through our community’s determination and resilient spirit, we will continue to grow stronger together as we move forward.

– Mayor Don Hardy and the Kinston City Council
