Traffic Stop Leads to Narcotics Arrest and Assault Charges

On February 23, 2026, at approximately 11:48 AM, officers with the Kinston Police Department’s C-Squad conducted a traffic stop on South East Street near East King Street for motor vehicle violations. The driver was identified as 71-year-old Curtis Strayhorn of Greensboro, North Carolina. The passenger was identified as 25-year-old Genesis Jones of Lenoir County.

During the traffic stop, officers observed indicators of narcotics violations, which led to further investigation. As a result of the investigation, officers located heroin and cocaine inside the vehicle. Both individuals were placed under arrest.

While officers attempted to take Jones into custody, she refused to comply and actively resisted arrest. During the encounter, officers sustained injuries. Both officers have since recovered.

Curtis Strayhorn was transported to the Lenoir County Jail and charged with the following:

- Possession of Heroin

- Possession of Cocaine

- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

- Motor Vehicle Violations

Genesis Jones was transported to the Lenoir County Jail and charged with the following:

- Possession of Heroin

- Possession of Cocaine

- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

- Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer Inflicting Serious Injury

- Assault on a Government Official

- Resisting a Public Officer

- Injury to Personal Property

Strayhorn and Jones both remain in custody at the Lenoir County Jail.
