Airport Road bridge closure in Kinston extended through November

Airport Road bridge closure in Kinston extended through November

A bridge replacement project that closed Airport Road (SR-1578) over Briery Run in June will now last through mid-November, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Crews began work June 9 to replace a box culvert with a new bridge. NCDOT’s original announcement estimated the bridge would reopen by Aug. 15, weather permitting. Updated information on DriveNC.gov now lists the closure and detour continuing until Nov. 14.

The project affects both directions of Airport Road near Herritage Street. Northbound drivers are detoured from Herritage Street to Queen Street (NC 58) to Academy Heights Road. Southbound drivers are routed from Academy Heights Road to Queen Street (NC 58) to Herritage Street.

The closure is expected to have a medium impact on traffic. The detour will remain in place continuously until the bridge is complete.
