Impaired driver arrested following pursuit
On May 18, 2025, at approximately 7:16 p.m., officers with the Kinston Police Department’s D-Squad attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Highway 11 for littering and other motor vehicle violations. The driver failed to stop and fled from officers, initiating a vehicle pursuit.
The suspect eventually came to a stop in the 500 block of Marilyn Drive. Officers safely took the driver, Thomas Sutton, 61, of Kinston, into custody without further incident.
Sutton was charged with the following offenses:
-Felony Flee to Elude Arrest
-Driving While Impaired
-Open Container of an Alcoholic Beverage
-Resist, Delay, and Obstruct a Public Officer
During processing at the Lenoir County Jail, officers discovered marijuana concealed in Sutton’s property. As a result, he was additionally charged with:
-Possession of a Controlled Substance Inside a Jail
