Trespassing call leads to assault on officers
On April 26, 2025, at approximately 7:13 p.m., officers from the Kinston Police Department’s A-Squad responded to a 911 call regarding a trespassing incident at an apartment in the Simon Bright community. The caller reported that an individual was trespassing and "causing problems," and provided officers with the subject’s name and clothing description. The subject was identified as 26-year-old Rahmel Suggs.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the caller and located Suggs, who was still in the area. The caller reported that Suggs had walked onto her porch, broke one of her personal items, and engaged in a verbal altercation. Other residents informed officers that Suggs had been previously banned from all Kinston Housing Authority properties due to prior incidents. Officers confirmed that Suggs was banned and trespassing on Kinston Housing Authority property.
During the investigation, Suggs became irate and aggressively approached the caller’s door. He opened the door and began arguing with her. As officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, Suggs slammed the screen door, causing injury to an officer’s hand. Officers advised Suggs he was under arrest and attempted to place him in handcuffs. Suggs immediately turned, adopted a fighting stance, and refused to comply with commands. During the struggle, Suggs attempted to choke one of the officers.
Officers were able to regain control of the situation and successfully took Suggs into custody. He was transported to the Lenoir County Jail and charged with:
• Two counts of Felony Assault Causing Injury to a Law Enforcement Officer
• Second-Degree Trespass
• Resisting Arrest
The Kinston Police Department remains committed to protecting the safety of all residents and ensuring that violations of the law are addressed swiftly.
