Obituary: Paulette Burroughs
November 12, 1949 – December 14, 2025
La Grange-Paulette Lancaster Burroughs, 76, peacefully departed this life on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Born on November 12, 1949, in Wayne County, Paulette was the daughter of the late Paul and Landora Cruse Lancaster. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jan Lancaster. Her devoted chihuahua, Sandy, was surely waiting to greet her.
Paulette spent many years working in circulation at the Kinston Free Press, where she formed countless lifelong friendships through her daily interactions with customers and coworkers. A true people person, Paulette never met a stranger. Her quick wit and infectious humor meant that laughter was never far away when she was nearby. Bringing smiles to others was one of her greatest joys, and her presence had a way of brightening everyone’s day.
A devoted Carolina fan, Paulette proudly bled Tar Heel blue. She followed her beloved team closely, celebrating their victories and enthusiastically sharing their stats. On the rare occasions they lost, she preferred to simply change the subject.
In her later years, Paulette and Doug enjoyed their cherished “daily runs” to Food Lion and the cemetery. These outings often included friendly conversations with familiar faces at the grocery store and quiet moments honoring loved ones who had gone before them.
An excellent cook, Paulette showed her love through food, happily sharing meals and treats with family, friends, and coworkers alike. She was especially known for her Christmas candy, a holiday tradition many looked forward to each year.
Family was the center of Paulette’s life. As the mother of an only child, she shared an unbreakable bond with her daughter, Kelley. Paulette was a constant source of support, encouragement, and pride, always present for every milestone and everyday moment alike. Her grandsons, Kevin and Joshua, were truly the light of her life; the sun rose and set in them, and she delighted in being involved in their lives in every way possible. Whether offering guidance, sharing laughter, or simply being there when they needed her, Paulette made sure her family always felt loved and supported. Her 37-year marriage to Doug was a testament to her devotion and loyalty, marked by happiness, partnership, and a deep commitment to family above all else.
A service of love and remembrance will be held Thursday, December 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, with Pastor Tom Mellay officiating. The family will receive friends in the hour prior to the service. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Paulette is survived by her husband of 37 years, Doug Burroughs; daughter, Kelley Pittman and husband Jay; grandsons, Kevin Foss (Deanna Matthews) and Joshua Quinn; step-grandsons, Austin Pittman and Justin Pittman and wife Macee; great-grandchildren, Stetson and Ryland; sisters, Kay Mooring and husband Charles, and Margaret Narron; special friend, Alice Wright; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.
