Three LCC students selected for ECU Engineering Scholarship

Three LCC students selected for ECU Engineering Scholarship

Lenoir Community College, in partnership with ECU and the National Science Foundation, has presented Zachary Bishop of New Bern, NC; Kevin Jones of Rolesville, NC; and Hugo Sanchez-Delgado of Snow Hill, NC with the PIRATES (Providing Inclusive Residential And Transfer Experience Support in Engineering) Scholarship.  This scholarship is intended to provide students interested in the field of engineering with the financial means to attend Lenoir Community College entirely free, if it is their intention to then transfer to ECU to pursue a four-year Bachelor Degree in Engineering.  In addition to the $3,000 annual amount awarded to each student while enrolled at LCC, the scholarship also may provide students with additional funding for subsequent years at ECU upon transfer.

Each student was required to submit a scholarship application to be vetted by both Lenoir Community College’s Engineering Chair and ECU’s Department of Engineering.  To qualify for this full-ride scholarship, students had to show demonstrated financial need, provide high school transcripts showing a GPA of at least a 2.5, be first-time college students, show intention to transfer to ECU after completion of an Associate Degree at LCC, and provide evidence of other qualifications for the scholarship.

Each of the students who were selected submitted an autobiography regarding their previous educational experiences.  Extensive questions were asked of each applicant to ensure they met the qualifications set by the National Science Foundation and ECU.  Of the recipients selected, one graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA, another had volunteered numerous events at the Fiesta Latina Festival in Snow Hill and at the Kinston Community Health Center, and all demonstrated the qualities any college or university would seek in a scholarship recipient.

LCC is proud of each of these students for their accomplishments and their decision to attend LCC for Engineering.  The National Science Foundation and ECU’s Department of Engineering are helping to provide Lenoir, Jones, and Greene County students with the opportunity to further their education in Engineering through these funds, which will ultimately benefit our community through developing a skilled workforce.  Interested applicants in future academic years should contact LCC at 252.527.6223, ext. 974.
