Lenoir County Public Schools (LCPS) students showcased their scientific prowess at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair held on Feb. 15 at East Carolina University, winning over 50% of the awards. The school board recognized the students at its March 3rd board meeting.
Recently, rural Eastern North Carolinians have been put through the wringer. Many of us are still recovering from Hurricane Helene and trying to make ends meet after losing our homes and businesses. Mrs. Myrtle Barrow McKeel Heath, age 107, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 2nd, 2025, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. Funeral Services will be held 2 PM Thursday, March 6th, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with Pastor Mike Parks officiating. Interment will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.
On March 4, 2025, at approximately 12:30 AM, officers from KPD’s B-Squad conducted a traffic stop on Riverview Lane. Upon approaching the driver, officers observed narcotic violations. A subsequent search led to the recovery of an illegally concealed firearm.
On March 3, 2025, KPD’s D-Squad responded to a report of a gunshot wound in the 300 block of Airport Road. Officers arrived on the scene and located a 23-year-old victim suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg.

At 12:20 am, Kinston Department of Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the area of Stroud Avenue and Stadium Drive for a reported structure fire. Crews arrived on scene to a working fire from a single-story wood frame residential structure. All occupants were out of the structure
