William Doyle “Bill” Whitley, Jr., known to many as “Big Daddy”, 66, of Kinston passed away Thursday, October 12 at his home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, October 16, 2023 at 7:00 PM at Howard-Carter Funeral Home with visitation to follow.

Personally, I do not need a reason to love oysters, I already do and always look forward to a fall oyster roast in the crisp fall air. I long ago learned the proper way to shuck an oyster and enjoy!! Oysters are the shelled gem of the sea; they have a very unique chewy texture and a salty briny taste.
Lori Carraway Bryant, 63, of Pink Hill, NC, passed away Friday, October 6, 2023, at ECU Health, surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 6pm at Edwards Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Yesterday, the Kinston Police Department added a new face to its force as they swore in Thomas “Levi” Scott. Born on April 16, 2014, Levi lives with Cardio-Facio-Cutaneous Syndrome, or CFC Syndrome, and uses a wheelchair for mobility.

The Lenoir County Fair has come and gone but what a fun night had by all, especially the judges, as they tasted remarkable recipes prepared by local cooks during our Casserole Cook-Off! I know the pride that overwhelms my soul when someone comments on how good the meal I prepared was or how they can’t wait for one of my particular recipes

After twelve years of committed service on the Kinston City Council, Sammy C. Aiken, a retired 20-year U.S. Navy veteran, has plans for the future of the city he represents. Although he was born and raised in Eden, he’s lived in Kinston for 42 years, and his service stretches beyond his tenure in the Navy. He has contributed to the community, serving on boards and committees.
Increased crime in recent years has brought safety concerns to the forefront of many American’s minds. This is particularly true in our home state of North Carolina, where crime has been on the rise. For example, in Asheville, violent crime increased by 17.4 percent and aggravated assault increased by 21.8 percent from 2021 to 2022.
As I sat down to write this column I thought a lot about what I would write. I thought about whether my focus would be on the positives and negatives of the recent budget bill or just the impact it has on teachers in general. I chose to do both
