Felicia Solomon Seeks Re-Election, Focuses on Infrastructure and Education

Felicia "Nikki" Solomon, a longstanding community leader and incumbent is up for re-election to the Kinston City Council in the upcoming 2023 Municipal Election. Solomon has served on the council since 2015 and brings with her over 20 years of community service experience. She has a track record of working with school budgets, serving on various community boards, and was a key presenter that helped Kinston obtain the All America City designation.

Solomon describes her candidacy as a continuation of her ongoing commitment to the community.

"My desire to help make things better in my community to impact the quality of life for all of Kinston's residents remains the same as it did when I was elected in 2015," Solomon said.

She emphasizes her commitment to represent the will of the people. "I am not afraid to stand alone as a dissenting vote nor do I put my head in the sand when it comes to issues of accountability."

One of Solomon's main focuses for her next term is on local infrastructure improvements, particularly road resurfacing. She discussed how she and former Councilman Gordon Vermillion had successfully advocated for increased funding for road repairs. She would also like for the city to consider at least a slight reduction in property tax.

"Road resurfacing has been a priority since I joined the Council in 2015," she said.

In the context of education, Solomon lauded the Lenoir County Public Schools (LCPS) for its accomplishments and its role in the community.

"It is important to maintain awareness of the accomplishments, initiatives, and recognitions received in LCPS," Solomon said.

She further emphasized the district's partnership with Lenoir Community College, local industries, and businesses.

"Our community is led by a School Board that has been recognized for its accomplishments,” she said. “It is our role to serve as cheerleaders, support the work of our educators, and definitely not search for opportunities to discredit."

Solomon praised the leadership of Chief Goyette and the efforts of the Kinston Police Department. She highlighted various platforms like the KPD Podcast and KPD Citizens Police Academy that were developed to foster community interaction with the police.

"The focus on continual professional development for our officers from cultural sensitivity training to understanding mental health is another step in the right direction," Solomon said.

On the economic front, Solomon expressed support for the efforts of the County Manager and the Global TransPark Economic Developer in recruiting new businesses to the region.

Solomon reaffirmed her commitment to transparency and accountability in her office. She advocates for active public engagement and dialogue. "The voices of the people are necessary. It is a part of doing due diligence. I live by making decisions that will allow me to sleep at night."

Solomon expressed her desire to mentor rising leaders. "It is extremely important to begin to provide opportunities for young leaders to prepare to serve in local government," she added.
