On January 7, 1970, Lt. Commander Michael George Hoff was shot down and disappeared while on a mission with Attack Squadron 86 near North Vietnam. A year later, his wife, Mary Helen Hoff, a member of the National League of Families, recognized there needed to be a symbol to remember the missing and prisoners of war in Vietnam.
The Distinguished Young Women of Lenoir County program proudly presents Adyson Whaley, Distinguished Young Woman of Lenoir County for 2023, in its annual program which will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 in the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Kinston High School. Whaley is currently a freshman at North Carolina State University and is the daughter of Bevan and Ginger Whaley.

Officials named Arendell Parrott Academy student, Miss Hannah Henderson (New Bern), as one of more than 16,000 Semifinalist in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth $28 million that will be offered next spring.
Officers responded to UNC Lenoir for a report of indecent exposure involving Michael Hardy (62). It was reported that Hardy exposed his genitals to multiple people (including children between the ages of 11 & 12). Hardy was arrested for Indecent Exposure and placed in the LC Jail under a secured bond.
Officers encountered Jamaurus Sutton for a parking violation. During the encounter, Sutton provided a false name to officers. As officers discovered Sutton's true identity, he began to refuse to follow lawful orders. Sutton was subsequently placed under arrest for Obstruct and Delay.

The Pink Hill mayoral election has encountered another hurdle as an election protest has been filed, again challenging the residency of mayoral candidate Michael Horne. The protest comes after a previous challenge to Horne's eligibility was dismissed by the Lenoir County Board of Elections.

The property sold for $5 million, or $97.63 per square foot.
The Kinston License Plate Agency (LPA) will open a temporary office while repairs continue to its permanent location at the Kinston Plaza Shopping Center which was damaged by a tornado on June 22. The temporary office will open on Sept. 14 at 2407-C N. Heritage St., which is in an undamaged area of the same Kinston Plaza Shopping Center.
Charlie Marvin Taylor had his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at La Grange First Free Will Baptist Church. Charlie is the son of Brad and Angela Taylor and the grandson of Wilbur and Linda Taylor, Etta Hardy Rouse, and Dwight Rouse.
Officers responded to a report of a disturbance involving Rakiem Moore pointing a firearm at an individual. Moore left the area prior to officers arriving.

Our Unsung Hero this week is a remarkable woman named Sue Ellen Maddux. Her incredible contributions to the community have earned her the title of Unsung Hero, recommended by none other than the Kinston Police Department Chief Keith Goyette.

The Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue was dispatched to 1006 Clifton Terrace at 8:45 AM, on September 8th, in reference to a Structure Fire. Kinston Police Officers and Kinston Fire crews arrived quickly to the scene. Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue, had a rapid knock down and control of the fire.
A 42-year-old Kinston man has been arrested on sex offense charges against a 13-year-old girl. On Sept. 3, the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office received information from a concerned parent about alleged inappropriate behavior between an adult male and a juvenile female. The LCSO investigation led the agency to press charges against Virgil Todd Chase for attempted statutory sex and indecent liberties with a minor.
SHPD is requesting the community's assistance with identifying these subjects in reference to a larceny that occurred on 09/10/2023 at the Family Dollar located on Kingold Blvd.
David “Dave” Lee Roseby, 68, was last seen in the La Grange area by family members on Aug. 15. He is 5-foot, 4-inches tall, has grey close-cut hair and a grey mustache. He frequently wears a baseball cap and is likely wearing apparel with the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL logo on it.
