A new store, "Tarheel Trading Post," is set to open its doors at 204 N Herritage Street on October 1, 2023, aiming to offer a variety of North Carolina-based products. Owned by Brandon Corey, the store will feature a range of items sourced from within the state.

Andrew Acheampong of Kinston was named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at University of Maryland Global Campus. To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.

The Kinston Police Department has issued a stern advisory to residents regarding the operation of unregistered all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-road motorcycles on city streets. The department has observed a concerning increase in the use of these vehicles in inappropriate settings, which not only endangers the operators but also poses a significant threat to bystanders and other motorists.
On Thursday, August 10, 2023, at approximately 8:13 pm, officers from the Kinston Police Department were dispatched to the 700 block of West Road in Kinston in reference to a shooting. The victim, Marquetta Norman, 35-year-old female from Greensboro, was shot in the neck by an unknown suspect.
As summer winds down, students are going back to school and legislators are getting back to business by overriding more of the Governor's vetoes and finishing up with the State Budget process. Through a partnership between Lenoir, James Sprunt, Sampson, and Wayne Community Colleges, the colleges were recently awarded $1 million from the Anonymous Trust in support of a new, two-year Latino Initiative called “Train the East.” Each community college will receive $250,000 to be used over the two years.
On August 10, 2023, members of the Kinston Police Department, the United States Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office were able to apprehend Dionate Whitson, 23, of Asheville N.C. during a traffic stop on Hwy 70 West in Kinston, N.C.
The Greene County Sheriff's Office is currently looking assistance from the public regarding a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning 08/06/2023 on Willow Green Rd.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place today at Emma Webb Park in Kinston to mark the commencement of a long-awaited major renovation project. The event was attended by city officials, community members, and representatives from various organizations involved in the initiative.
