Meet Me Greene County ... Anya Mattingly

Neuse News is continuing our series to introduce Greene County readers to some of the influential, interesting, and decision-making leaders of our community. Consider this “Meet Me Greene County” column a look into what makes Greene County the special place it is to live, work and play. This week we are featuring one of the newest Principals in Greene County Schools, Anya Mattingly, Principal of West Greene Elementary.

Mattingly is originally from Plymouth, NC, but along with her husband and daughter moved to Snow Hill in 2006.  She and her husband Erik, have one daughter, Piper, a recent graduate from GECHS, and two sons, Branson and Corbin, who will be in 6th grade at GCMS this school year.

Mattingly graduated from ECU in 2008 before beginning her career with Greene County Schools.  She first worked with the Greene County Family Literacy Program before transitioning to the Greene County Schools Pre-K Center.  While there, she enrolled in ECU’s Master of School Administration program and graduated from ECU a second time in 2018. She then joined the team at West Greene Elementary as Assistant Principal under Mr. Cook’s leadership during the 2019-2020 school year.  Effective August 1st, Dr. Creech and the GCS Board tapped her to become Principal at West Greene Elementary with Mr. Cook’s transition to Greene County Middle.

When asked what she felt was the most important aspect of her job, Mattingly shared that “I feel very strongly about working to promote positive relationships within my school and community while empowering families to be active participants in the education of their children.”

She shared that “I think Greene County has its fair share of challenges from things that are out of our circle of control.  However, I do my best to stay focused on what is in my control and strive to maintain a view of things from that lens.   In that regard, I think one of the biggest strengths of GCS is that we are a community of people working toward a common goal:  the success of all of our students.”

She went on to share “From my perspective, the students in our district are not just students who attend our schools, they are “our students.”  As educators, we are able to connect with families in a very personal way, from collaborating to setting developmental and academic goals for their children to see that partnership through to fruition at graduation and beyond.  It is a very unique privilege.”

When asked what words of wisdom she wanted to share with our readers, Mattingly shared “I am going to share one of my favorite quotes: "Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A 'you can do it’ when things are tough."  from Richard M. DeVos”
