US Supreme Court rules NC absentee ballots can be received and counted up to 9 days after Election Day

The US Supreme Court refused Republicans' request to overturn a decision by the State Board of Elections to extend the period from three to nine days because of the coronavirus pandemic, with a deadline of November 12. An absentee ballot received after 5 p.m. on Election Day will be counted only if they are postmarked on or before Election Day and received by mail no later than 5 p.m. November 12.

Jay’s 108 Sushi Bar opens (today) Thursday at 5:00 pm. The new restaurant in Kinston will join those in Jay’s Restaurant Group, including restaurants in Goldsboro, Greenville, and Mt. Olive. The original plan to open earlier in the year did not happen due to the pandemic and staffing.

ECU selects Minges Bottling Group for exclusive pouring rights

East Carolina University officials have awarded exclusive pouring rights to Minges Bottling Group, a Pepsi-Cola company, after a competitive bid process. The contract gives Minges Bottling Group the exclusive right to sell its products on campus with a combined bid of up to $8.2 million over a period of 10 years beginning January 11, 2021. This replaces the previous contract with Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated which had been in place since 2011.

KPD Chief releases message after four shootings in two weeks

Chief Tim Dilday of the Kinston Police Department has a message for the community after a rash of violence over the past weeks. “The Kinston Police Department has responded to four shooting scenes in the month of October, all of which occurred within the past two weeks. An arrest has been made in one of these cases and suspects have been developed in each of the others. Additional arrests are forthcoming. While today’s shooting investigation is in the preliminary stages, I can tell you that at least one suspect has been identified.” (read the entire message)

Kinston police investigate person shot in the parking lot of 4101 W. Vernon Avenue

On October 27, 2020 at 1246 hours officers of the Kinston Police Department responded to the parking lot of 4101 W. Vernon Avenue in response to a 911 call of a person who had been shot. Officers arrived on the scene to find Khalil Dail, 21 year old male of Kinston, NC who suffered from one gunshot wound to his upper torso. He was transported to Vidant Medical Center via ambulance.

KPD investigates person shot in Dollar Tree parking lot

Reports on social media indicate a shooting took place on Tuesday afternoon outside the Dollar Tree in the Westpoint Shopping Center on West Vernon Avenue in Kinston.

One commenter on Facebook reported hearing a gunshot, and witnessing a large police response a few minutes later.

Scanner traffic indicated that at least one person had been shot during the incident.

NC House Speaker Tim Moore campaigns for Rep. Chris Humphrey in Kinston

Today, NC House Speaker Rep. Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) campaigned for Rep. Chris Humphrey (R-Lenoir, Wayne) in Kinston at the NC Cooperative Extension office, an early voting location. Moore is serving his third term as the presiding officer of the NC House of Representatives and represents Cleveland County. Humphrey, the incumbent, serves as the House Majority Freshman Caucus Whip and is facing challenger Virginia Cox-Daugherty for the seat.
