GEC students embrace cultural heritage through Black History Month events

Greene Early College has embraced the observance of Black History Month throughout February with activities for the students. Established nationally in 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

GEC Student Appreciation Day

GEC celebrated its first Student Appreciation Day on Friday November 17. In today’s society special observance days are acknowledged throughout the year for special occupations such as Boss’ Day, Teacher and Nurse Day and so many adult occupations. However, the staff and administration decided to turn the tables and have a day to express appreciation for the GEC students.

No stone unturned

"To leave no stone unturned" is an idiom many have heard.  It means to do everything possible to find something or to find a solution to a problem. This saying rightly describes GEC math teacher Heather Davis; she is constantly seeking funding to enhance student’s learning experience at GEC.

Footloose at the Hop

Greene County Senior Center stirred a lot of sweet memories of their youth with a sock hop on September 29.  Also in attendance were some Greene Early College students who went to help but joined in the fun.  Decorated in the 50’s-60’s theme, the Senior Center was reminiscence of the attendees’ high school years.

Cougar Community Day

Following their tradition of giving back, Greene Early College, continued this mindset on September 22. Being an early release day, the staff planned a day of giving back to their school and fellow students. It was an opportunity to realize and plan for upcoming initiatives and special events national and school wide. Another positive outcome was an opportunity for students to network with other students across the grade levels.

A Day of Giving Back

August 17 was set aside as a “Day of Giving Back” to the community for Greene Early College students. Since the inception of GEC in 2006, volunteerism and a willingness to help out have always been integral parts of the school culture. The staff recognizes it as a valued life skill as it encourages students to engage in the community and contribute to its betterment.

The Rewards of Stick-to-itiveness

When Hannibal (about 218 BC) was told by his generals that he could not cross the Alps to reach Rome, he responded by saying, “If I cannot find a way, I will make a way.”  Thus was the attitude of Greene Early College math teacher, Heather Davis.   And find a way she did.

Not just the run-of-the-mill book report

If one entered Greene Early College's Cafeteria during the final two weeks of school, they would have been surprised to find a trendy "Popup Library." Colorful and inviting with an enticing beach theme, students discovered books that piqued their interest and were available for summer reading. These were not just any books; they had been carefully selected by English teachers Natasha Martin and Emily Garris at GEC.
