GEC Student Appreciation Day

GEC Student Appreciation Day

GEC celebrated its first Student Appreciation Day on Friday November 17. In today’s society special observance days are acknowledged throughout the year for special occupations such as Boss’ Day, Teacher and Nurse Day and so many adult occupations. However, the staff and administration decided to turn the tables and have a day to express appreciation for the GEC students.

Principal Taylor Moore stated, “At GEC, we believe that appreciating students is a gesture of kindness and a cornerstone of effective education. Recognizing and valuing students' efforts, achievements, and individuality can significantly impact their academic performance, motivation, and overall well-being. Appreciating students isn't solely about praising accomplishments; it's about recognizing their individuality and efforts, big or small. It helps build resilience and a growth mindset by emphasizing progress and improvement rather than just final outcomes. This year, we have emphasized being present each day, setting goals, and growing to meet those goals. During our first annual Student Appreciation Day, the staff wanted students to know their effort is being noticed and appreciated.”

The students were aware of the special day, but they did not know what to expect. As they arrived at school, they were greeted by a gigantic, colorful yard sign. Then as they entered the building, a bit wide-eyes, the staff was waiting to say, “We appreciate you”. Each student was given a bag of sweet treats. In fact, students heard that phrase throughout the day.

As they moved down the hallways, the walls were decorated with posters with messages of positivity, encouragement and appreciation.

During the morning break students were invited to the cafeteria to be served homemade hot chocolate complete with chocolate syrup, marshmallows, and whipped crème and a plate of more sweet treats. Also, there were drawings for gift cards.

As an added dimension of appreciation, a special place has been set aside in the cafeteria complete with inviting soft seating, charging capability, soft lighting and wall art. Students can be seen there studying, interacting with other students or just relaxing for a few minutes.

Hopefully GEC students realized they are truly important and appreciated. The time designated on November 18 helped to send that message to the students.
