John Hood: Conspiracy theories damage democracy

For weeks after the ballots were counted, supporters of the defeated presidential candidate insisted the election had been stolen. Some alleged a shadowy conspiracy to rig vote-counting machines, throwing out just enough legal votes and manufacturing just enough illegal ones to decide the outcome.

BJ Murphy: Killing the American Dream One Stimulus Check at a Time

Whatever happened to tax credits and tax deductions? How many more payments will people expect in the future before we declare the pandemic over? The utter reliance and potential household budgeting for future stimulus payments disincentivizes Americans from using their skills and creativity to find a way to meet their obligations. The unintended consequence of stimulus payments may very well be a methodical way of killing the American dream by taking away all incentives of hard work and individualism.

John Hood: Elections are a soap opera

By no means do I mean to suggest that the 2020 elections aren’t momentous. I have spent much of the past two years talking about them. But whatever happens this year, the republic will survive. Claiming otherwise is wrongheaded and dangerous.

Thousands greet Trump at Greenville rally

An enthusiastic crowd greeted Pres. Trump in Greenville today at his campaign rally. Trump spoke for well over an hour, touching on familiar campaign refrains such as immigration, the economy and taxes. The president also touted his administration’s response to the pandemic, and criticized NC Gov. Roy Cooper for his coronavirus response, and encouraged residents of the state to express their opposition for continued shutdowns to the governor.

BJ Murphy: North Carolina - Trump and Cooper’s Races to Lose

While reporters and TV talking heads continue to refer to North Carolina as a swing state, they are largely mistaken. We do not “swing” between Republicans and Democrats for president and governor much to the media’s chagrin. Our selection of US Senators, however, would qualify for that designation. The reality is that NC tends to vote for Republican presidents, Democratic governors, and flip flops on US Senators.

Reece Gardner: Covid-19 - Hopefully, the tide is turning

Hopefully the tide is turning. In a letter to all state governors last week, President Trump announced that his Administration would be releasing new guidelines for state and local officials that will allow them to be more flexible in response to the coronavirus and to seek a balance between public health & economic stability. We are not going to eliminate or cure all the illnesses of this world, but we can reach out to those who are suffering and perhaps ease their pain.

Reece Gardner: A lighthearted start to the new year

I want my first Column of the New Year to be rather lighthearted, starting with humor, then with one of the many examples of those who do so many good things for us on a regular basis, and then an example of the sacredness of wisdom. I believe that some significant events are about to break on the impeachment saga, and I will look forward to commenting on that in next week's column.
