Reece Gardner: A lighthearted start to the new year

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I want my first Column of the New Year to be rather lighthearted, starting with humor, then with one of the many examples of those who do so many good things for us on a regular basis, and then an example of the sacredness of wisdom.

I believe that some significant events are about to break on the impeachment saga, and I will look forward to commenting on that in next week's column.

First, some humor: The local sheriff was looking for a deputy, and a young man named Chad wanted the job and went in for an interview.

"Okay," the sheriff asked, "What is 1 and 1?", to which Chad responded, "11."

The sheriff thought to himself, "That's not what I meant, but he's right." He then asked, "What two days of the week start with the letter 'T'?"

Chad answered, "Today and Tomorrow." The sheriff was again surprised that Chad had supplied a correct answer that he had never thought of himself, and thought that perhaps he had a very creative mind.

"Now Chad, listen carefully. Who killed Abraham Lincoln?"

Chad thought very hard for a minute, but finally admitted, "I don't know." So the sheriff suggested, "Well, why don't you go home and work on that one for a while." So Chad wandered over to the pool hall where his pals were waiting for the results of his interview.

"Hey, Chad, how was it?"

"It went great! First day on the job and I'm already working on a murder case!"

Now, on appreciation, supplied to me by Niece Amie Dubs, about Nurses: Somebody asked, "You're a nurse. How much do you make?"

The nurse replied, "HOW MUCH DO I MAKE? I can make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you're scared. I can make your child breathe when they stop....I can help your father survive a heart attack. I can make myself get up at 5 AM to make sure your mother has the medicine she needs to live. I make my family wait for dinner until I know your family member is taken care of. I make myself work weekends and holidays because people don't just get sick Monday through Friday. So how much do I make? All I know is I make a difference!”

And now an example of the sacredness of wisdom, from the words of this song: "I thought number one would surely be me, I thought I could be what I wanted to be; I thought I could build on life's sinking sand, but now I can't even walk without You holding my hand; I thought I could do a lot on my own, I thought I could make it all the day long; I thought of myself as a mighty big man, but Lord I can't even walk without you holding my hand; No, I can't even walk without You holding my hand, The mountain's too high and the valley's too wide; Down on my knees, that's where I learned to stand, Lord I can't even walk without You holding my hand."

I will close with this thought: When there is nothing left but God, it is then we discover that God is all we need.
