Broken arm, older injury found in 2-year-old; KPD arrests parents on felony charges

On January 30, 2026, the Department of Social Services filed a report with the Kinston Police Department regarding a 2-year-old child who sustained a broken arm and was taken for medical treatment. During the medical evaluation, staff also discovered evidence of an older fracture.

Kinston Police Department detectives initiated an investigation into the report. After consulting with the Lenoir County District Attorney’s Office, detectives obtained arrest warrants for the child’s father, 28-year-old Joshua Capps, and the child’s mother, 26-year-old Shianne Godley. Both were charged with Felony Child Abuse Inflicting Serious Physical Injury.

On February 27, 2026, Capps and Godley were taken into custody and transported to the Lenoir County Jail. They remain in custody at the time of this release.

Due to the sensitive nature of this case no additional information will be released at this time.
