Obituary: Peggy Ham Clifton

Mrs. Peggy Ham Clifton, age 69, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 4, 2026, following a brief battle with cancer. Born October 4, 1956, Peggy was the daughter of the late Lyman and Nannie Mae Ham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Ham.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Jim Clifton; and a sister, Grace Myatt. Peggy was aunt to many nieces and nephews and was an integral part of the family. She served as a confidant and friend to everyone and shall be greatly missed.

Peggy and Jim married on August 13, 1994. They were inseparable and enjoyed traveling, riding motorcycles (in the early years), and entertaining friends. For many years they hosted a Christmas Eve Breakfast, and it was a special time of fellowship with family and friends. Jim was devoted to Peggy’s well-being and happiness. His support and care for her was never more evident than during her battle with cancer. He showed her compassion and love and provided hands-on care every day.

Peggy began working at John Harper Insurance at the age of 17. It was her first and the only job she ever had. A career that spanned fifty-two years took her from employee to owner of the agency; and in that half-century, she became John Harper Insurance. Customers loved her, trusted her, and never gave a second thought to their insurance specifics once it was in her capable hands. She knew every customer by name and will be truly missed in the Snow Hill community.

Peggy’s mentor and life-long friend, Bill Geitz helped and guided her in the early years. Bill was a devoted friend, and Peggy was so thankful to Bill for his generosity, along with Jay Howell, in helping establish her business and become such a success in the insurance industry. Another key person in Peggy’s life was Debbie Russo. Debbie owns insurance companies in Goldsboro and through the years they supported and learned from each other. Debbie has played a critical role in the transition of the business to Peggy’s nephew, Matt Vandiford.

Peggy was a long-time member of Liberty Baptist Church. Her favorite role at the church was heading up the kitchen for Vacation Bible School, along with her husband Jim and sister Grace and a faithful team of helpers. She also served and cooked for many homecomings, funerals, and any church events requiring food. Peggy was a devoted member and supporter of her church.

Funeral Services will be held 10 AM Monday, September 7th, at Liberty Baptist Church with Pastor James Grandinetti officiating. Interment will follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the services from 9:00 – 9:50 AM in the Fellowship Hall of Liberty Baptist Church.

The family would like to express their grateful appreciation to the staff of nurses and aids of Gentiva Hospice and Healthcare.
