Obituary: James Alan "Jimmy" Smith, Jr.

James Alan "Jimmy" Smith, Jr., of Kinston, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

A visitation will be held Friday, October 2nd, 9 AM, followed by the funeral service, 10:00 AM, at First Baptist Church in Kinston, North Carolina. A graveside service will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Jimmy was born on July 27, 1941, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He graduated from New Hanover High School and continued his education at Wilmington College before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During the Vietnam era, Jimmy was drafted into the United States Army and served at Fort Hood, Texas. Following his military service, he joined DuPont in Kinston, where he spent the majority of his career as a Production Specialist. He was respected by his colleagues for his hard work and dedication.

After moving to the Kinston area, Jimmy's Aunt Francis and Uncle Wade Allen arranged a blind date with Charlotte Mills. That introduction led to Jimmy and Charlotte getting married on August 19, 1967. Together they built a wonderful life centered on faith, family, and friendship.

Jimmy enjoyed listening to Bible lectures, following UNC basketball recruiting and athletics, caring for his beloved dog, Gracie, and spending time with his family. His greatest joy was attending family gatherings and watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Charlotte; his son, Michael and wife Tuyen; grandson, Tu and wife Zin; great-grandchildren, Sofia, Ellie, and Zoe; his son, Marc and wife Rebecca; grandchildren, Gabe and Chloe; and his sister-in-law, Scarlet and husband Ken Jordan.

Jimmy will be remembered for his devotion to his family, steadfast faith, strong work ethic, and kind spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
