NWS: Severe Storms, Flash Flooding Possible Across Eastern NC Today

NWS: Severe Storms, Flash Flooding Possible Across Eastern NC Today

Thunderstorms are expected to develop early this afternoon (potentially as early as noon). Overall conditions today are highly favorable for torrential rainfall rates and the risk for multiple storms to track over the same area.

Rainfall rates of 2-3”/hr are possible with storm totals of 2-5”+ through tomorrow morning, posing a risk of flash flooding particularly for urban and poor drainage areas. A Flood Watch is in effect from roughly New Bern west through 8 AM Saturday.

Strong to severe storms are also a threat, primarily this afternoon and evening, with the highest risk also from New Bern west. The main risks are damaging winds of 60+ MPH, but quarter sized hail and a tornado cannot be ruled out.
