Lenoir County Man Charged Following Hatchet Assault
On June 19, 2026, deputies with the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office D Shift responded to the 2000 block of Ham Street in Kinston in reference to an altercation between two brothers that resulted in serious injuries after one brother was allegedly assaulted with a hatchet.
Upon arrival, deputies learned that Donell Carlton had sustained injuries after allegedly being struck with a hatchet by his brother, Linwood Carlton, 40, of Kinston. Deputies made entry into the residence to make contact with Linwood Carlton. Despite being given multiple commands by deputies, Carlton failed to comply. Deputies ultimately took Carlton into custody following the deployment of OC spray.
Lenoir County EMS responded to the scene and evaluated both individuals involved. Donell Carlton was transported to UNC Health Lenoir for treatment of injuries to his left upper arm. Linwood Carlton was also transported for OC decontamination before being transported to the Lenoir County Jail.
As a result of the investigation, Linwood Carlton was charged with:
• Felony Attempted First-Degree Murder
• Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury
• Misdemeanor Resisting a Public Officer
Linwood Carlton was placed in the Lenoir County Jail and is being held without bond.
