Missing 13-year-old killed in early morning roadway incident

JONES COUNTY — A missing 13-year-old girl was found deceased Tuesday morning after an apparent vehicle strike, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Maddie Benson was located around 7:10 a.m. along 10 Mile Fork Road. Investigators believe she was struck and killed by a motor vehicle while walking along the roadway.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident.

Benson, who was described as autistic and nonverbal, had been reported missing from the Trenton area. She was last known to be approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 190 pounds.

“This is not how we want any search to end,” said Jones County Sheriff Matt Wineman. “To have a young life taken in any manner is tragic, and my thoughts and prayers are with Maddie’s family.”
