The following restaurant inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Taco Bell

1806 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Date: 12/23

Score: 98

Observations: 

Fried potatoes and fried chicken strips were not labeled with the correct time during inspection.

"Sanitizer" label is barely visible on sanitizer container at the end of the main prep line.

Clean under prep line on side that is currently not being used. There is a sticky spill in this area. Clean hot holding area on prep line that is currently not being used.

Pipe is broken under prep sink.

Repair leaks in ceiling located in between the end of the main prep line and coolers. Ceiling is leaking in multiple areas on the floor and mop bucket inside facility.


Shawarma House

1004 W Vernon Avenue Suite B, Kinston

Observations: 

Person in charge does not have food safety manager certification. 

Tahini, tzatziki, ranch, and other sauces not labeled today. 

Tongs used to plate salad mix were laying down flat on top of salad mix today. All in use utensils shall be stored in the food handle up, or on a clean, sanitized surface.

No chlorine test strips available today. Chlorine is being used as sanitizer.

Need more lighting at blender/area where hummus is being made. Lighting here is only 6 ft candles. Need at least 50 ft candles of lighting in all food prep areas.


Spirit Cafe

Observations: 

No hot water at handwashing sink near serving line. 

Water at all lavatories in women's and men's restrooms was 58-63 degrees F today. Hot water shall be maintained at a minimum of 100 degrees F at all handwashing sinks, including those in restrooms.

Rolling cart, condiment tray, cabinet underneath beverage station, gasket on 2-door, 2-drawer refrigerator, and ice machine baffle are minimally soiled. Paperwork on top of pop-up toaster. All nonfood contact surfaces shall be cleaned as frequently as needed. 

Remove mats and clean floor where they were located. Floor behind ice machine is soiled.

Repair baseboard under handwashing sink near serving line where damage has occurred. 

Walls underneath and beside hand-dryers in restrooms are being affected by blowing air, and paint is peeling off the wall.


Burger King

2402 N Herritage Street, Kinston

Observations: 

Person in charge could not locate employee health agreements today or give any information of an employee health policy. 

Men's lavatory in men's restroom was 86 degrees F. All hand washing sinks shall provide at least 100 degrees F for handwashing.

Vegetable chopper contained dried food debris today.

Stainless steel cup of sanitizer located beside ice cream machine was unlabeled today. All chemicals and chemical containers, including sanitizers, shall be labeled with their common name. 

Paper towels out of their original box/container stored in storage barn. Towels can become dirty/contaminated if removed from their original packaging until use. Single service cups at tea area contained a lot of tea splatter from making tea. All single service items shall be stored in areas and methods to prevent contamination.

Replace torn gasket on small meat freezer on main cook line.

Clean equipment behind ice cream machine that contained splatter from ice cream. Detailed cleaning needed at fry station to remove grease build up. Remove packaging from ice machine; it is absorbent and not easily cleanable. Clean ice scoop holder at drive thru area; the outside contained tea/soda splatter.

Handwashing sink near walk in cooler was dirty today; contained large of amounts of build up in sink.

Tiles (baseboard) are broken and/or missing under drive thru window. Wall is in poor repair in this area. Grout is missing in between floor tiles near 3 compartment sink and near broiler area. Repair these areas. 

Ceiling vent covers are dusty today.

Clean floor drain under 3 compartment sink. Remove accumulated food debris.

Lighting under hood where broilers and fryers are located is 19-32 foot candles. Lighting in food prep areas shall be 50 ft candles.


Aggies Steak and Subs

909-D W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Observations: 

Buckets of raw chicken wings stored above opened bucket of French fries in small prep cooler across from fryers. All foods shall be stored according their final internal cooking temperatures. Raw meats shall always be stored under ready to eat foods. Once bags of French fries are opened, foods have to stored according to their final internal cooking temperatures to protect from cross contamination.

Bulk container of cut provolone cheese not dated in walk in cooler. Various egg rolls containing cooked chicken, cooked steak, and cooked vegetables stored in freezer and inside small prep cooler without dates.

Windex spray bottle used to store an unknown chemical today. All chemicals and toxic substance bottles and containers may not be reused once bottle is emptied. 

Chlorine sanitizer in spray bottle exceeded 500 ppm concentration today. Chlorine sanitizer shall be at a concentration of 50-200 ppm. Chemical sanitizers generated on site applied to food contact surfaces shall meet the requirements in 40 CFR 180.940 for food contact surface sanitizing solutions. 

Unpacked sub rolls with cheese stored in direct contact with shelving today.

Ice scoop laying flat down on top of ice today in ice bin at soda machine. 

Clean inside and in between fryers to remove grease build up and accumulation. Clean shelving in small prep cooler. Clean containers in freezer holding packaged items and egg rolls. 

Need more lighting at prep sink. Lighting at prep sink is 18-20 ft candles; need at least 50 ft candles of lighting in food prep areas. Need more lighting in walk in cooler. Lighting in walk in cooler is 3-5 ft candles; need at least 10 ft candles of lighting in walk in coolers.


Daily Grind Cafe

1605A W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Observations: 

No ServSafe certified employee present.

Employee drink, opened can, stored on prep cooler today. All employee drinks shall be stored in a closed beverage container, preferably with a straw to reduce hand to mouth contact risk. Employee drinks shall be stored in areas away from food, prep areas, clean equipment and utensils, and clean linens.

Employees making coffee drinks and prepping chicken salad and pimento cheese with no effective hair restraints. Hair pulled back is not considered effective; employees must wear a hat, visor, hair net, or other effective means with hair restrained.

Ice scoop buried in ice in ice machine today. Handle was not visible and buried down inside ice. All in - use utensils shall be stored with handle up, inside of food; in a clean area or container between uses; in running water with a velocity to remove particles from scoop; or in water at least 135 degrees F. 

Clean linens stored on top of prep unit with bananas and inside of prep coolers.
