Obituary: Evander Hayes “Van” Willoughby
Mr. Evander Hayes “Van” Willoughby, age 92, passed away Friday evening, October 2, 2026, at the NC State Veterans Home in Kinston. A native of Robeson County, he was born February 5, 1934, the son of Clegg Hall Willoughby and Lydia Pittman Willoughby.
Van was a proud veteran of the United States Army and a dedicated professional who valued hard work and community service. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished 39-year career with the former Carolina Power & Light (CP&L), from which he eventually retired. Never one to be idle, Van quickly transitioned into a second chapter, spending several years working as a Crop Adjuster.
A Christian and true southern gentleman, Van was a long-time member and active part of the congregation of the First Baptist Church of Snow Hill. A dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he was happiest surrounded by his family, especially his grandsons and was a fixture at their school football games. After moving to the VA Home, Van looked forward to weekly lunches with them.
In addition to his parents, Van was preceded in death by a loving son, Derek Van Willoughby; his wife of 57 years, Shirley S. Willoughby; and siblings, Maizelle W. Davis, Eva Mae Willougby, and Clyde Hall Willoughby.
He is survived by his devoted daughter, Andrea Willoughby of Snow Hill; a daughter-in-law whom he considered a second daughter, Susan Willoughby Markley and her husband Joe, who became a son-in-law, both of Goldsboro; his cherished grandsons, Austin Willoughby (Courtney) of Winterville, Josh Willoughby (Taylor) of Pikeville, and Matt Willoughby (Logan) of Goldsboro; great-grandchildren, Jordan Van Willoughby and Brooklyn Kate Willoughby; sister-in-law, Becky Miller of Lumberton; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held 2 PM Wednesday, October 7th, at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Brick Crowder officiating. The family will greet friends and extended relatives during the hour prior to the service from 1:00 – 1:50 PM in the church fellowship hall.
