Neuse Regional Libraries Launch Media Conversion Service to Preserve Community Memories

Neuse Regional Libraries are helping community members safeguard their personal histories through a Media Conversion Service, which enables patrons to digitize older analog media formats. This initiative offers an accessible and reliable way to preserve family memories, historic recordings, and unique audio collections before they are lost to time.

Many households have irreplaceable memories on VHS tapes, such as family gatherings, holidays, and milestones. Others possess audio cassettes with personal recordings or rare vinyl records. Because analog media degrades over time and playback equipment is increasingly obsolete, digitizing these items has become essential for long-term preservation.

Through the Media Conversion Service, patrons can submit VHS tapes, audio cassettes, and vinyl records to be digitized by library staff. The service fee is $10 per item, with a limit of three items per patron each month. Patrons can bring in their own flash drive, or purchase them to store converted files ($6.00 for 8GB or $8.00 for 16GB). Digitization requests take up to two weeks to process, and patrons have 30 days to retrieve their completed projects and original media.

This offering aligns with Neuse Regional Libraries’ objective to provide innovative resources that serve the community. By transitioning physical media into digital formats, the library helps residents protect their valued collections against natural wear and age-related degradation.
