Council to amend historic preservation rules, approve $32,000 project
Kinston City Council will consider changes to historic preservation procedures and approve funding for an update to the city’s design standards.
One proposed amendment would extend the filing deadline for certificates of appropriateness from 10 working days to 20 working days before Historic Preservation Commission meetings. Planning staff said the change is needed to meet state notice requirements and allow adequate review time.
Council will also consider establishing a special revenue fund for a $32,000 Historic Preservation Fund project. The project will update design standards governing alterations, new construction, demolition, and disaster preparedness in local historic districts.
The project is funded through a federal Historic Preservation Fund grant, with $22,000 provided by the federal government and a required $10,000 match from the city.
The updated design standards will apply to locally designated historic districts and landmarks. The Kinston City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at City Hall, located at 200 N. Queen St. The meeting is open to the public.
