Meet Me: Rebecca Cornelison

Meet Me: Rebecca Cornelison

I’m addicted to scary things. By that, I mean I do a lot of things that would scare most people.

I was 12 years old when I decided I would do theatre at North Lenoir High School. COVID set back my master plan, and I didn’t start until my sophomore year, where I made my debut as Miss Lynch in Grease the Musical. Is there a better way to build confidence than by playing a grumpy old English teacher in front of half of Kinston?

My old soul helped me land roles as elderly characters two more times—one of them was 102.

I’ve never been one to sit still and just let life happen.

When I was younger, I was obsessed with slime videos on YouTube. My mom wouldn’t buy me any because it was too expensive—completely valid. So, I got creative. I made my own slime, sold it at school, and did pretty well (not to brag). I may have caused some slime into carpet-related drama in a few households, but that’s business, right?

That drive to make something out of nothing never left me. Today, I run my own small business called Suzie’s Sunshine, where I sell handmade crochet items.

When I started at UNC Wilmington last August, I thought I had everything figured out. I was going to major in Marine Biology, graduate with honors, study sharks for a living, and move somewhere tropical.

Then I took an oceanography class... and changed my mind.

I spiraled through a dozen different majors, which was painful for someone who needs to have her future mapped out. But then, during an interview with one of my advisors, I discovered a path I hadn’t considered. She told me she majored in Communication Studies with a concentration in Marketing—and something just clicked.

I had run social media for my high school drama department and helped promote our shows. I loved it. But I didn’t think I could make good money doing that kind of work. After some deep-dive research, I found my niche in creative marketing and decided to major in Communication Studies.

All jokes aside, no one really tells you how hard it is to go to college and figure out your future at the wildly immature age of 18. Honestly? Sometimes the best approach is to jump in the deep end without a life jacket and see where the current takes you.

That was my mindset when I applied for an internship at Magic Mile Media.

Now here I am, a newly appointed intern, getting handed wild new challenges every day... and loving it.
