NWS Morehead City: Cold front expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and coastal hazards
A cold front moving through eastern North Carolina late tonight through Friday afternoon is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds and hazardous coastal and marine conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Morehead City.
Forecasters say 1 to 3 inches of rain are expected, with ponding of water possible on roadways Thursday night into Friday morning. Strong south to southwest winds could lead to isolated power outages, particularly between Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout, where a Wind Advisory is in effect.
Along the coast, high surf south of Cape Hatteras may cause beach erosion and localized overwash along N.C. Highway 12 through Friday afternoon. A High Surf Advisory has been issued for that area.
Marine conditions are expected to be hazardous due to strong winds and large breaking waves. Gale Warnings remain in effect for coastal waters south of Oregon Inlet.
The National Weather Service said this will be the only briefing issued for this event unless forecast conditions change.
