NWS warns of strong winds and coastal flooding later this week

The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued its first briefing for an approaching weather system expected to bring strong northeasterly winds and coastal flooding to eastern North Carolina beginning Thursday.

A cold front will move across the Carolinas on Wednesday, followed by persistent northeast winds through the weekend. Combined with king tides expected Tuesday through Saturday, the conditions could lead to elevated seas and flooding in coastal areas.

Forecasters say confidence is high that the region will experience strong winds and coastal flooding Thursday and Friday, with the potential for impacts to continue into the weekend. There is moderate confidence in a possible coastal low developing along the front, which could bring even stronger winds and long-period swells if it forms.

A second briefing is expected Tuesday evening. For more information, visit weather.gov/mhx.
