Evelyn Dove Coleman: Sonya Stocks Davis Is a Wise Judge
When Governor Josh Stein appointed Sonya Stocks Davis to the District Court bench, it was a proud moment for the Kinston/Lenoir County community. I knew Judge Davis' parents before I met her. Her father was Chester Stocks who helped to mold many 4-H youth for decades. Her mother is Mallie Stocks who broke the mold in community service by serving on so many boards and committees. Their dedication to Kinston must have rubbed off on their daughter.
This is what Mayor Don Hardy had to say about her: "On behalf of the citizens of Kinston, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Judge Davis on this well-deserved honor, and I thank Governor Josh Stein for making this impactful appointment. Judge Davis has demonstrated unwavering dedication to justice, integrity, and service throughout her career. Her commitment to fairness and advocacy has uplifted countless lives, and now, as she takes the bench, her leadership will inspire even more."
Though I jokingly say that she went to the wrong school--since she graduated from NCCU and I graduated from UNC-- she is one of the smartest people I know. Her giftedness and wisdom certainly benefits those who appear before her in court, as it did for her clients whom she counselled and advised for years. I, too, applaud Governor Josh Stein for making such a well-reasoned decision.
